We chat with UpHere writers Steven Levenson and Danielle Sanchez-Witzel about incorporating the musical aspect into the hulu series storyline:
Now available to stream on Hulu, Up Here is a love song for anyone who's ever let the mistakes of the past dictate their future. The romantic comedy takes place in New York City and uses original music to symbolize the unrelenting thoughts circulating in an individual's head. After spending their lives failing to drown out the opinions of others, Lindsay and Miguel's blossoming relationship begins to lead them down a road of self-fulfillment.
Danielle Sanchez-Witzel: I would never have said this before the show, but now I'm going to pick Mae Whitman. Why would I not want her? Steven Levenson: There was a production of this show in La Jolla in 2015, I want to say, and I actually did see that production, and had talked to Bobby and Kristen at the time about the potential of developing the show as a stage musical and coming on as a book writer because they were interested in continuing to develop it. Then they got really busy with life, and I got really busy with life, and then fast-forward many years later, and there was a pandemic.
Danielle Sanchez-Witzel: I think there were themes, for the most part, that we brought over. "Can you ever really know someone?" certainly was a guiding theme for us and, ultimately, the overarching theme of all eight episodes. Can you ever really be known? Can you ever know someone? I never saw the musical, but I read it. I was able to read it. They shared all the music, which was really helpful.
