Time named Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich, who remains detained in Russia, to its 2023 Time 100 list of most influential people

Russian authorities detained Mr. Gershkovich in the eastern city of Yekaterinburg on March 29 while he was on a reporting assignment. He has been held on an allegation of espionage; the Journal and the U.S. government have vehemently denied the allegation and have demanded his immediate release. The U.S. has said he isn’t a spy. Mr. Gershkovich was accredited to work as a journalist in Russia by the country’s foreign ministry at the time of his detention.,” broadening U.S.

Mr. Gershkovich’s inclusion in this year’s Time 100 list comes a year after the magazine named both Russian President and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to its 2022 list, saying the men represented a “dichotomy never more visible.” Mr. Zelensky was also named Time’s Person of the Year in 2022.and said that by arresting the 31-year-old Journal reporter, the Kremlin had “opened another front in its war on the press.”
