There are teases, and there are teases that are just straight-up announcements. This is the latter.
Yesterday, Xbox showed off a new video that had someone following a trail of glitter through their house which ultimately led to a screen showing the Xbox Games Showcase. Once I got past the horror of something sprinkling glitter all over their house and Xbox controller for this joke , it was…extremely clear what this was revealing.
It’s Fable. Xbox will be showing Fable at the Xbox Games Showcase. The glitter trail is a clear reference to the sparkling trail you would follow through that game to quest objectives. And if that wasn’t enough they are…literally playing music from Fable during the video. So yes, it’s Fable, they are showing something from Fable.
This will be the first meaningful public update about Fable since its teaser debuted in 2020, nearly three years ago. The new game is being developed by Forza’s Playground Games, a talented developer who will be dramatically switching genres for this. But it’s running on the ForzaTech engine, which is how we get all those pretty car graphics. Who knows how that might translate to Fable’s fantasy landscapes.
Just the fact that Fable will appear at all feels like it will probably make the Xbox Games Showcase better than Sony’s recent one, which refused to talk about any high profile, far-out exclusive projects, and was followed shortly by an announcement that a game that was expected to be shown, The Last of Us Factions, was being delayed when it didn’t even have a release date in the first place.
