Gleyber Torres is batting second against the Braves on Wednesday, switching spots in the Yankees starting lineup with Aaron Judge.
Boone’s take is in line with Torres’ production this year. Not only has he been arguably the Yankees’ most consistent hitter all year — it’s either him or Isiah Kiner-Falefa — but he has a 38.7 ground ball rate. Only 42 other qualified hitters in MLB have a lower ground ball rate than Torres in 2023.. On Tuesday, the slugger walked to lead off the innings twice. Both times Judge was promptly erased by Torres double plays.
Torres and Judge flip-flopped positions in the lineup for Wednesday’s series finale in Atlanta. Boone said the lineup change wasn’t because of Torres’ double play surge. It was more a product of the Yankees trying to “shake things up” as they search for answers on offense. “Obviously teams are pitching carefully, understandably, to Aaron,” he said. “If we can get an extra opportunity to get a guy on the front of him, if Aaron continues to get on like he does, it’s a chance for someone in the middle to come up with a big one to hopefully put some crooked numbers on.”
