As Luke Skywalker assembles his green lightsaber, he admits that Yoda and Obi-Wan failed him by ignoring this Jedi tradition. Neither imagined Luke would need a new weapon, forcing him to travel the galaxy to learn its construction.
Warning! This article contains spoilers for Star Wars #34 Luke Skywalker learned everything he knows about being a Jedi from his two masters, Obi-Wan Kenobi and Yoda. Though in one regard, that was detrimental to his development, as Star Wars confirms the one way both of them actually failed Luke.
Luke began his Jedi training in Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope after he sought out ‘Old Ben Kenobi’ on his home planet, Tatooine. When Luke found Ben , Kenobi told Luke that he had the potential to be a great Jedi Knight just like his father was. At which point, Obi-Wan gives Luke Anakin’s old blue lightsaber. Luke accepts the lightsaber, and with it, his destiny to become the greatest Jedi that ever lived.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT Star Wars’ Luke Skywalker was Never Taught How to Build a Lightsaber In Star Wars #34 by Charles Soule and Madibek Musabekov, Luke Skywalker and his friends just made it out of No-Space, where Luke’s yellow lightsaber was destroyed. While R2-D2 did his best to repair it, the Kyber Crystal within the hilt was cracked, which meant that there was no real way to repair it completely.
To be fair, Luke Skywalker was given Jedi training more-or-less on the fly, not to mention he was essentially an adult who didn’t even possess a youngling’s base knowledge of the Jedi way. The entire galaxy was in the middle of a civil war, and the enemy was hunting everyone associated with Luke–which, obviously, included Luke himself. Basically, Luke didn’t get the best training possible because there was no time for it.
As Luke flips through page after page of the ancient Jedi texts, he only finds explanations on the spiritual importance of a Jedi building their own lightsaber, not the instructions on how to do it. While fans know that Luke will eventually figure it out and create the iconic green lightsaber that was first shown in Return of the Jedi, this comic confirms that it will be a long and arduous process. Proving that both Yoda and Obi-Wan failed Luke Skywalker in one major way.
