No American man has won a Grand Slam title since Andy Roddick in 2003, but a young generation of American stars is confident they will contend for major titles in the near future.
Though Brooksby is back home in Sacramento and disappointed not to be competing in Milan due to an abdominal strain suffered after qualifying at the Paris Indoor, he too believes the young American will contend for majors in the not-too-distant future.
After the U.S. Open, Brooksby continued his strong season by advancing to the semifinals of the European Open. “I think next year’s going to be even better, so I’m just really excited,” he said, adding that he’s looking ahead to the Australian Open. Of the three, only Nakashima played college tennis. He enrolled at Virginia in January 2019 at 17 and went 17–5 in singles and 20–3 in doubles. At the end of the season he received the ACC Freshman of the Year and All ACC First Team awards and was also a part of the All ACC Academic Team. After one semester he decided to forgo his remaining years of eligibility and turn professional., but turned pro after he redshirted his freshman season due to injuries that lasted nearly months.
