Jim Parsons' depiction of the socially-inept genius became so popular that CBS decided to expand the nerd-centric franchise by green-lighting a prequel that tackles the character's childhood in Texas.
As Young Sheldon breaks away from The Big Bang Theory, it embraces its familiar aspects more. This means that there has been extra focus on the rest of the Coopers which is good for the show overall since it diversifies its storytelling. However, this levels the field for the characters, with Sheldon sometimes having to play a supporting role in other stories that concern the rest of his family.
The fact that Sheldon has been mostly separated from his family doesn't help his cause. Because most of his arcs take place in East Texas Tech, he feels removed from the bigger storylines in Young Sheldon. For what it's worth, his personal arcs aren't as compelling as his family's. Mandy and Georgie's romance is possibly the best original plot that the prequel has come up with.
