Young Ukrainians living in the U.S. say they're watching the invasion with a mix of guilt, fear, and powerlessness.
. She can’t sleep. When she tries to eat, she throws up. Her phone won’t stop buzzing with notifications: from texts, Twitter, emails. On Instagram, she swipes away ads for purses to get to her direct messages, where her teenage nieces are sending updates on what the family is experiencing asMaryna moved to New York from Kharkiv, Ukraine, as a teenager to attend New York University, and then stayed for a job in international relations. She is the only person in her family in New York.
Non-Ukrainians, she said, can help by calling their elected officials, donating to Ukrainian causes, and resisting the urge to intellectualize a conflict that has deadly stakes for the people living through it: “When I’m talking to somebody that’s not close to the situation and they want to tell me about geopolitics and ‘America’s interests’ in all of this and capitalism, I want them to know that bulls**t isn’t really helping.
Sasha’s entire family, except her mom, aunt, and cousin, still live in Ukraine. Many of her family members are low-income workers in farming or manufacturing. Through texts and phone calls, a cousin told her that he’s been driving around for hours trying to leave the city of Kyiv but the roads are blocked. Sasha’s uncle said they can hear explosions outside their apartment. One of her cousins posted on Instagram that no one is going to save the Ukrainians and they’re going to fight on their own.
