Target fulfills about 97% of its e-commerce orders by shipping merchandise from its nearly 2,000 US stores, but the growth of online orders has put a strain on stores' backrooms where orders are packed and typically shipped.
Once an online shopper places an order, an employee picks the product from the store's inventory, packs it up, and hands it off for delivery via Shipt or another carrier. To ease that kind of pressure on stores, simplify the demands on delivery partners, and speed up fulfillment times for customers, Target in 2020 borrowed a page fromand began developing its own"sortation center" concept near its Minneapolis headquarters.
Following the pandemic surge in e-commerce, sortation capacity gained even greater importance as major carriers like FedEx and UPS began limiting shipment volume from some customers, or cutting others off completely.
