I have been a professor at the University of Georgia for almost 15 years. I primarily teach upper-level courses in the Atmospheric Sciences Program. I serve as Director of that program, but I occassionally teach a Introduction to Weather and Climate class for non-major students checking off a “science class” box for graduatoin requirements. Over the years, I have noticed that many students struggle with science concepts that involve multiple variables or processes happing simultaneouly.
First, there has to be a source of “lift.” This lift may be caused by daytime heating of the surface, fronts, orographic lift , or convergence of air. For the sake of instruction, meteorology professors often use the concept of a parcel or volume of air . As a parcel rises because its temperature is warmer than the surrounding air or because it is being forced to rise, it will cool.
In reality, our climate system is governed by a multi-variate, multi-process called the Greenhouse Effect.
