February 16th is a unique Alaskan holiday, honoring Elizabeth Pertrovich for her bravery and role in Alaska's Anti-Discrimination Act.
FAIRBANKS, Alaska - On February 16, Alaska celebrates a holiday honoring civil rights activist Elizabeth Wanamaker Peratrovich.
According to the University of Alaska, on February 16th 1945, the bill was put up for discussion and passed 19-5. When the bill reached the Senate, a two-hour discussion began and opposition arose. Throughout these rising tensions, Peratrovich held her composure and rose her hand to speak. Immediately after speaking to the court room, Peratrovich seemed to have moved the crowd and Senate, receiving a “rousing” applause. The bill passed 11-5 by the Alaskan Territorial Legislature.
In 1988, the Alaska Legislature officially established February 16th as the annual “Elizabeth Peratrovich Day.”
