Amazon Ring patents describe a dystopian future where networks of cameras identify 'suspicious' people by recognizing their faces, retinas, skin texture, gait, voice, and even odor
, and regularly shares footage with authorities. If Amazon actually added biometric capabilities to Ring cameras, even just facial or voice recognition, it would have an unprecedented ability to scoop up identifying information about not just its own customers, but people out in public. At least one of the recent Amazon patents mentions using this new technology for eventual"criminal prosecution.
The result is"a series of 'storyboard' images for activity taking place across the fields of view of multiple cameras," according to the patent, and a bothersome person is"this guy was going around the neighborhood asking about a lost dog. Some of my neighbors mentioned him bugging them too." A couple of other patents, awarded March 2, explain how pushing a button on a doorbell camera starts audio and video recordings. A version of this camera would record biometric information through features such as a"fingerprint scanner and an eye scanner." The device would be capable of"fingerprint recognition, eye recognition, voice recognition, and facial recognition," according to the patents.
