Manager Dusty Baker slotted him second in Houston's batting order for his uncanny ability to work professional at-bats. Brantley's .370 on-base percentage trailed only Yordan Alvarez for the Astros' team lead.
Brantley required surgery on the same shoulder in 2016, part of a lengthy list of injuries he sustained earlier in his career with Cleveland. The 35-year-old outfielder stayed relatively healthy across a four-year Astros tenure that may be drawing to an end. Brantley re-signed with the Astros on a two-year, $32 million contract last winter.
