What’s on tap: S.F. Symphony goes to the movies; Help Is on the Way returns; hard-hitting satire ‘Dreamhou$e’; Playwrights Fest; Concord Jazz Fest.
There is much to see and hear in the Bay Area this weekend for music and theater fans. Here’s a partial rundown.There’s an enduring link between film music and symphony orchestras, and this week’s San Francisco Symphony program offers a delightful example of how that alliance can work.
Help Is on the Way XXVI: Broadway & Beyond, features such entertainers as Debby Boone, Julie Garnye, Garrett Clayton, John Lloyd Young, Sally Struthers, Shawn Ryan, Bay Area singer Paula West, and many more. A limited silent auction precedes the show starting at 6:30 p.m. After the concert, VIP guests will be invited to a nightclub-themed after party with the cast at the nearby Beacon Grand Hotel.
The jazz festival runs through Sunday at venues in Concord. The program has been dubbed “Take Five” in honor of legendary jazz artist Dave Brubeck. Most of the events are free.Harpist-violinist Carlos Reyes plays a free show at 6:30 p.m. as part of the Todos Santos Music & Market Series.Jazz-fusion act Glib Rig performs a free show at 5 p.m. during Jazz Night at the Concord Tap House. Show also features saxophonist KJ Focus.
A staged reading of Sharifa Yasmin’s drama “Close to Home,” about three unhappy Southerners whose lives intersect, will be offered noon Aug. 6 .
