The Microsoft founder both praises and criticizes his Apple rival in a new interview.

The Microsoft MSFT, -0.07% co-founder laid the magic metaphors on pretty thick during a special episode of CNN host Fareed Zakaria’s “GPS” show on Sunday, which delved into leadership, and lessons that leaders in business and politics have learned about managing other people.

He admitted that he and his “mostly male” workforce were “intense” and worked long hours early in Microsoft’s rise. But when asked about his leadership style compared to that of his late Apple AAPL, -2.06% rival Steve Jobs, Gates not only referred to “the bad parts of Steve, of at times being an a------,” but the bookworm billionaire seemed to take a page from Harry Potter in comparing himself and Jobs to wizards.

He cited the NeXT, Inc. computer company that Jobs started when he first left Apple as an example. It failed in the sense that it was expensive and didn’t sell well to the higher education and research labs it targeted toward. But it was also paved the way for “some [Apple] products that are really quite amazing,” Gates said.
