has somehow maintained the “breath of fresh air” status for the past two seasons while re-inventing her signature styles, adapting to the digital universe with beautiful storytelling and staying true to her 80’s inspirations. This SS22 collection is unmistakably Brøgger, but elevated and matured.
From the first glance at the collection, you can see Julie Brøgger has really grown into her craft and her audience, yet she’s certainly not resting on her laurels just yet. The colour palette this year is an exquisite mash-up of pastels and brights, with unexpected tones of seafoam, apricot and marigold. The retro colour-block tailoring is where we see an homage to Brøgger’s past circus clown suits, but it’s clearly more measured and not as OTT as before.
The season’s favourite shades of purple and lilac have naturally been used, but I appreciate not seeing simply another version of the Evie dress reworked in a different colour. Brøgger seems to be slowly taking her excessive frills and ruches off the team - not entirely, but enough to make space for quilting and texturising.
Brøgger is not playing it safe, but playing to her strengths. There’s still plenty of exaggerated, contrasting trains, asymmetry, big bows and metallic headbands straight out of an aerobics class, but the volume has been turned down a notch when it comes to design. Although juicy and saturated with colours of the rainbow, the collection somehow seems simpler and more to the point. Not better, but new and improved - and definitely as gorgeous as ever.
