\u0022Once again, we see a budget for K to 12 education that falls short of anything we would consider an investment in education.\u0022

The 2022-23 budget allocates a $3.8 billon to support classrooms, early learning and child care, libraries and literacy initiatives — an increase of $47.2 million or 1.3 per cent.

The budget also includes $17.5 million for qualified independent schools and historical high schools, including $2.6 million to support increased enrolment and create a new funded independent school category. STF president Patrick Maze said Wednesday was “a sad day for students” because the 1.5 per cent increase falls well below that margin and doesn’t include targeted investments to address class size and composition.Article content

Davidson said there are some encouraging investments in the budget: student learning support funding is moving in the right direction, addressing an issue that has been “severely underfunded” for years, although it will still fall far short of what divisions are investing in that area, he said. School divisions will be able to access the fund for repairs, renovations and additions to prolong the life of schools.

COVID budget impasse halts aid to test and treat uninsuredCOVID budget impasse halts aid to test and treat uninsuredWith an urgent funding request stuck in Congress, a federal agency says it can no longer cover COVID tests and treatments bills for uninsured people and will stop taking claims at midnight Tuesday. “The lack of funding for COVID-19 needs is having real consequences,' Martin Kramer, a spokesman for the Health Resources and Services Administration, said in a statement. The Uninsured Program is an early casualty of the budget impasse between Congress and the White House over the Biden administration’s request for an additional $22.5 billion for ongoing COVID response.
