CONSIDERING THAT ALLY was outside his house with no pants on in the middle of the night, Matthew’s new girlfriend was actually pretty understanding. Her name was Siobhan, and when she came downstairs to offer Ally a pair of leggings, she couldn’t have been sweeter.
She plodded home, cars speeding by, ignoring the girl in the oversized sports T-shirt, thong, and high-heel mary janes. She straddled humiliation and defiance, shoulders back, hands balled up in fists. She had no idea how she’d managed to spend the last 48 hours. Caz was sleeping at her girlfriend Meg’s shabby-chic Venice bungalow for the weekend , and Ally had declined to go to their Saturday barbecue, despite the promise of “verified strangers galore.” She had FaceTimed into dollhouse club, feigning a cough, and she’d admired her cohorts progress on their projects and was ashamed she had not added anything to her miniature Victorian row house since she built the stoop two weeks ago.
