A group advocating for Washington, D.C. to be made a state is going after Sen. Michael Bennet on the presidential campaign trail

A group advocating for Washington, D.C. to be made a state is going after Sen. Michael Bennet on the presidential campaign trail.

The group, “51 for 51”, will spend six figures on digital and print ads pushing Bennet to support a bill making D.C. a state — and to do so with just 51 Senate votes, bypassing the filibuster, the group told POLITICO.in his “plan to fix our broken politics.” But to do so with 51 votes would require abolishing the filibuster, a step Bennet does not want to take.

“It requires us to get rid of the filibuster rule, and I’m not prepared yet to do that,” Bennet says in footage filmed by the activists, which was included in theThe group says it has interviewed 10 other Democratic presidential hopefuls, all of whom back a move to seek D.C. statehood with a Senate simple majority. This includes front-runners like Sen. Elizabeth Warren and South Bend, Ind. Mayor Pete Buttigieg, along with others like Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand , Andrew Yang and Washington Gov.

“Given that it took 51 votes in the Senate to give a lifetime appointment to the Supreme Court, D.C. residents deserve action as well,” 51 for 51 campaign manager Stasha Rhodes said in a statement. “Hopefully Senator Bennet responds to this grassroots campaign and reconsiders his opposition to using 51 votes to make D.C. the 51st state.”

The group's print ads will appear in newspapers in early primary states, including the New Hampshire Union Leader, the Des Moines Register, the South Carolina State and the Nevada Appeal. The ads will also run in Bennet’s hometown paper, The Denver Post.
