Which companies helped match between $2 and $3 billion last year?

It’s the season for giving to charity, and while some donors maximize their donations by having their employers match their contributions to nonprofits, that option isn’t available at some of America’s biggest employers. Walmart WMT, +0.02%, Amazon AMZN, -0.52% and FedEx FDX, +1.81% are among the companies that don’t have matching gift programs for their employees.

A typical corporate matching program works like this: If a worker at, say, GE GE, -0.82% — which created the first corporate matching program in 1954 — donates $50 to a nonprofit like the American Cancer Society, the company chips in $50 too. Two reminders for people who want to use their employer’s match program: Some programs only match donations to certain types of nonprofits. For example, a company may have a policy against matching donations to religious organizations. And you can only claim the tax deduction for your part of the donation, not your company’s match.Walmart — 2.2 million employees worldwide; 1.5 million in the U.S. The largest private employer in the U.S.

The original deadline for the matching program was Sept. 30, but the deadline was extended to Dec. 31 because the company was “so excited with the response,” spokeswoman Stacey Keller said. “We are encouraging employees to donate through the holiday giving season, and have their donation doubled by Amazon, to support our neighbors in need.”
