Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce gets silver, and Shericka Jackson takes bronze for a Jamaican medals sweep.
In the women’s 100 meters, one of the most anticipated finals of each Olympics, Elaine Thompson-Herah of Jamaica defended her 2016 Rio win and bested the field with a time of 10.61 to win gold in Tokyo and claim the title of fastest woman in the world.
Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce and Shericka Jackson finished second and third , respectively, completing the Jamaican sweep of the podium. Jackson ran a personal best in picking up the bronze medal. The new Olympic record narrowly edges the old mark of 10.62, which was run by Florence Griffith-Joyner in 1988. Thompson-Herah’s time also makes her the second-fastest woman ever at the distance, behind Griffith-Joyner’s world record of 10.49.
A spectacular light show on the 100-meter homestretch introduced the athletes in the finals to an ominously quiet stadium without fans, which in normal circumstances would be raucous for the sprint about to go down. While from the gun it seemed Fraser-Pryce had the cleanest start, Thompson-Herah was neck-and-neck with her by about 20 meters. By the midpoint of the race, it was clear one of the two would take gold, but it was Thompson-Herah, 29, who closed the strongest. So confident that she had the win, Thompson-Herah pointed her left arm before crossing the line, and was in awe when she saw the new Olympic record on the clock.
