It takes some doing, but the effort is well worth it.
Really delicious! Each component is really flavorful and easy to make, although I'd agree with other reviewers who said that a two-day approach is best. The time it takes to cook onions down to any kind of color/caramelization is well beyond 45 and while the recipe doesn't explicitly say you need to caramelize, you can't get color until you get much closer to that. We caramelized ours fully, and that took several hours for 5# of onions.
Not entirely sure about the heated discussion about water v broth and in any case if mine turned out salty with water I can’t imagine what it would be like if I used broth. Would definitely do again even if it does mean being in the kitchen for 2 and a half hours.Time consuming yes, but easy. Quite good, not amazing but good. Scallions/green onions are definitely required. I did use 4 cups of beef broth and 8 cups of water. Otherwise followed recipe to the letter. Might not use broth next time.
