These numbers have risen since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic.Every two weeks during her final two years of high school, Diane* spent an hour talking to Dr. Beth Oller.

Dr. Oller is a family physician serving the north-central Kansas farming community, and is in practice with her husband, Michael, who is also a family physician. She isn't a psychologist or psychiatrist, but like all family medicine physicians, Dr. Oller is clinically trained to diagnose and treat patients with mental health issues and is often the first line of defense for her patients struggling with their mental health.

"Quite often, I make a diagnosis of depression or anxiety when the patient's complaint is fatigue or irritability," adds Dr. Oller."People think depression is crying in a corner, and anxiety is panic attacks. But there are many other ways those conditions can emerge, and your family doctor can help."

In either event, patients can count on their family physician to help them address depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, and other behavioral or mental health concerns. To prepare individuals for seeing a family physician regarding their mental health,If you're regularly anxious, worried, irritable, have trouble sleeping, or no appetite, it could indicate a mental health issue. Many individuals are uncomfortable discussing mental health concerns.
