Martinez’s home run Saturday against the San Diego Padres was not the only one he’s hit against a major league pitcher this week.
The first came against teammate Michael Grove in a simulated at-bat at the Dodgers’ Camelback Ranch facility in Arizona, where Martinez was attempting to come back from a bout with lower back tightness. After three days of practice at-bats, Martinez declared himself ready to return.
The Dodgers can complete a three-game sweep of their National League West rivals on Sunday at Dodger Stadium. Urías allowed solo home runs to Juan Soto and Ha-Seong Kim in the first two innings, when Dodger Stadium was mostly bathed in sunlight for the afternoon contest. Urías allowed only one hit the rest of the way, striking out four batters and walking none.
With left-handed hitter Jake Cronenworth batting, representing the winning run, manager Dave Roberts summoned southpaw Caleb Ferguson from the bullpen to record the final out. Ferguson struck out Cronenworth, earning his first save since 2018.
