Off-duty police officer discovered fatally wounded early Saturday on South Side after shift, police say

An officer was shot dead early Saturday morning after her shift on the South Side in the Avalon Park neighborhood, Chicago police said. Shortly before 1:45 a.m., she was found with gunshot wounds in the 8100 block of South Blackstone Avenue. A responding officer rendered aid, and she was transported to UChicago Medicine where she died, police said.The officer, who had been with the police department for three years, had just completed her shift and was assigned to the Calumet District station on the city’s Far South Side.
