Letters to the Editor - Coming to terms with the pandemic | Opinion

Since the pandemic’s beginning, public health officials worldwide have given us unfailingly consistent guidance about at least one thing: widespread testing is crucial.

Consider the recent crisis many hospitals experienced, with a surge of omicron cases taking up their beds and sickening their staffs. How much worse would this surge have been without widespread testing? I have been involved with grief support at Faith & Grief Ministries for over a decade. It has made a big difference in how I live with the grief I still feel after the death of my husband 23 years ago. Faith & Grief, a multifaith nonprofit, provides a safe place to share one’s story and talk to others experiencing loss with trained facilitators.

While vaccines are readily available in the U.S., it still seems to be considered a personal choice. In low-income countries, availability, not choice, is the issue. The only way to break this cycle of inequity and see a return to normal life is to beat this virus with vaccines worldwide. If we want to protect our jobs, economy, families and those most in need, then we need to vaccinate the world to end the pandemic for good.
