Mace Windu is one of the most popular Jedi, but there are subtle hints in lore and his history that hint at an unexpected connection to the dark side.
Star Wars lore hints at Mace Windu’s potential vulnerability to the dark side of the Force. Played by the iconic Samuel L. Jackson, Mace Windu is generally considered one of the most popular Jedi of all time. The character debuted in Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace, but he had percolated in George Lucas' mind from the very beginning.
As a mix of blue and red, purple represents both the light and dark sides of the Force. While it all came from a simple question Jackson asked Lucas, this color-coding aligns with Windu’s character, subtly revealing his potential to fall to the dark side’s corruption. Significantly, other Jedi from Legends continuity who’ve used purple lightsabers include Mara Jade and Anakin Solo, both of whom had important connections to the dark side.
The form was commonly used by both Jedi and Sith during their ancient war, but it was eventually forbidden within the Jedi Order. It became seen as a gateway to the dark side, with some choosing to practice it in secret. Remarkably, Mace Windu is only one of a few Form VII users who didn’t fall to the dark side thanks to his refining Juyo into Vaapad.
