Opinion: Mayor Bass right to focus on making Metro safe after many years of leadership failure
Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass last week added to her portfolio by stepping into the role of chair of LA Metro, the region’s vast transit agency.
Her vision for change at the troubled organization, which she laid out in a speech at Union Station, couldn’t be more timely or spot-on, if the rhetoric in her talk can be turned into reality. As our news group’s transportation staff writer Steve Scauzillo reported from the scene, Bass says she wants to increase ridership; move the homeless off the trains, stations and buses; improve rider wait times and make the system safer for anxious residents who’ve abandoned mass transit due to crime concerns.
Clearly, it’s the latter perception — that the increasingly widespread rail lines throughout Los Angeles County, and the old bus lines as well are simply not safe, especially for women riders, that needs addressing as Job No. 1. “Ridership is still down and the reduction is disproportionately among women who report they do not feel safe,” Bass said during her remarks made to an audience that included LAPD Chief Michel Moore.
