For 65 years he was one of the biggest mysteries in Philadelphia.
Joseph Augustus Zarelli was one of the greatest unsolved mysteries in the in Philadelphia for 65 years.
But that was it. Police put his photo on posters, but no name. No great breaks in the case. That changed late last year when advances in DNA and online genealogy records helped identify “The Boy in the Box” as Zarelli.The paper said Tuesday that it has identified the biological parents of Zarelli as Augustus J. “Gus” Zarelli and Mary Elizabeth “Betsy” Abel.
A relative of Betsy told The Inquirer that there was “No way in the world,” she could have been involved with abusing the boy. The Inquirer said that Gus Zarelli’s four children responded to interview requests through their attorney, Dan Bush, of West Chester. Bush told the paper that Zarelli and his family have been “attacked in every possible social media outlet, suggesting the most awful of things, all of which are baseless.”
