Nov. 2022 Election: Q&A with Corbin Sabol, California state Assembly District 79 candidate [Opinion]
Between now and early October when voting gets underway, The San Diego Union-Tribune Editorial Board is planning to publish dozens of candidate Q&As and nearly two dozen commentaries connected to a handful of San Diego city ballot measures and seven state propositions on the Nov. 8 election. Keep checking back as we fill in this voter guide.
A: The Democrats in California have controlled the Legislature for nearly three decades and in their pursuit to develop more wind and solar energy have ignored one of the best, cleanest, reliable and carbon-free sources of energy: nuclear. It is abundantly clear the Democrats in charge of this state have done little to nothing to prepare us for the drought we are currently in.
So what will happen when more electric cars hit the streets? Will we have enough energy to meet the demand? Based on current trends, I do not think we will. Rolling blackouts will probably increase and the cost of energy will skyrocket. We were promised a high speed railway to connect Los Angeles to San Francisco, but after $10 billion wasted, and who knows how many more billions will be wasted, we only have a shell of a completed project, which is well behind schedule. Meanwhile, crime and homelessness are rising, and our schools are failing.
People have a difficult time building new homes when the Democrats impose excessive taxes, fees and regulations. In 2020, Brian Freeman of Freeman’s Constructionof a 2,226-square-foot home and wrote that permit fees typically range between $28,000 to $45,000. We are extremely overtaxed. It should not cost $45,000 just to get the blessing from the government to build a house.
A: No, I do not see progress. Democrats have been in control of California’s Legislature for nearly three decades, and the homeless population has increased. Do you see progress? As your Assembly member, I will be an advocate to end the homelessness crisis by working with those experiencing homelessness to find the root of the problem and making them feel safe and secure so they can get back on their feet on their own terms, not just put a roof over their heads and call it a day like the Democrats want to do.
Many thieves today do not face jail time for their offenses; rather, they are released back onto the streets because there is nowhere to put them. Iwith a San Diego Police Department captain who said there is no way for him to stop the homeless from taking over public spaces and urinating and defecating in public places because there is nowhere to put them.
School choice, or as I like to call it, universal school access, will solve this problem and is the most equitable option to serve Californians of all income levels. A: It is fascinating to see how California had a surplus of nearly $100 billion and sitting Assembly members have a daily stipend of $211 while in session, on top of their, all the while, many Californians are struggling to pay their bills. The number of politicians out of touch with their very own constituents is staggering, and if the decline in population here in California isn’t a glaring signal that the Democrats are taking our state in the wrong direction, I do not know what is.
Q: California has the nation’s strictest gun laws and among its lowest gun death rates. What is your philosophy toward gun legislation? Have you or your family been directly affected by gun violence? Gun legislation only hurts the law-abiding citizen, people like you and me who would only want to protect ourselves, our families, our children and our homes from violent offenders.
