Playwright Salomón Maya and diector James P. Darvas have been developing this play together for 2-1/2 years

Over the past three decades, Salomón Maya been on a long and winding artistic journey as an actor, stand-up comedian, playwright, media producer and theater board member and marketing director.

“I come from a very blue-collar family and decided to write three different versions of myself in these three characters,” said Maya, 43. “There’s the father, who’s from the older generation and is old fashioned. The middle guy is in his 30s and 40s and has this duality of being American, but with the stigmas of the Mexican culture. And the youngest is only Latino on paper. He doesn’t speak any Spanish.

Maya said he started acting at age 10 and was mentored in playwriting at San Diego Rep by former artistic director Sam Woodhouse and former playwright-in-residence Herbert Siguenza. About 2-1/2 years ago, Maya brought his idea for “Mugre” to James P. Darvas, the artistic director of OnStage Playhouse in Chula Vista, where Siguenza has had several new plays produced.
