Montclair police officers investigating a crime had tried to pull over a vehicle on Bloomfield Avenue about 4:30 a.m., according to a statement from the Office of the New Jersey Attorney General.
“The officers were in the process of attempting to stop a vehicle in connection with a criminal investigation. The driver lost control of the vehicle, left the roadway, and struck a tree,” Acting Attorney General Matthew Platkin said in a statement.News4 New York reported the injured person was in critical conditionPlatkin did not state the nature of the crime for which the car was being pulled over.
The investigation is being conducted pursuant to Attorney General Directive 2019-4, which requires a state investigation of any death that occurs during an encounter with a law enforcement officer.
