The Las Vegas Raiders are hoping that should they have to call on rookie QB Aidan O’Connell; he can perform as well as Derek Carr did in his first campaign.
Updated September 30, 2023 2:16 PMRookie quarterback Aiden O’Connell of the Las Vegas Raiders, who has not been active for any of the first three games this season, might get his first start as a pro on Sunday against the Los Angeles Chargers at Sofi Stadium in Inglewood, Calif.
The Raiders have not had many rookie quarterbacks start in their 64-year history. Still, the best was Derek Carr, who was let go by the Raiders at the end of last season, apparently because he didn’t fit the offensive philosophy of Coach Josh McDaniels. The 6-3, 215-pound Carr was selected by the Oakland Raiders in the second round of the 2014 NFL Draft out of Fresno State after growing up as a fan of the Silver and Black in the San Joaquin Valley city of Bakersfield.
In 2021, Carr led the Raiders to a 10-7 record and back to the playoffs, where they lost to the Cincinnati Bengals in an AFC Wild Card game, 26-19, at Paul Brown Stadium in Cincinnati despite Carr completing 29-of-54 passes for 310 yards and a 14-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Zay Jones.
