COLUMBIA, S.C. - U.S. Senator Kamala Harris says every time she became the first woman elected to an office in California, she was asked how it felt to be a “first” in the position and prompted to talk about women’s issues.
Women candidates talk about traditional campaign issues in different ways, based on their perspective and identity, and also shape the conversation by deciding what policies are prioritized or even on the agenda at all, said Kelly Dittmar, a scholar with the Center for American Women and Politics at the Eagleton Institute of Politics at Rutgers University.
Their influence is reflected in the policies advanced by many of the 2020 contenders, including male candidates. Along with Harris, Warren and Gillibrand, Senator Amy Klobuchar, Representative Tulsi Gabbard and author Marianne Williamson have qualified for the first debate.
