The latest in a series of reports on the climate crisis has sparked renewed calls for Saskatchewan to take more aggressive climate action.
“The latest report really paints a grave picture and the picture says that we’re not really doing enough right now to tackle and meet those commitments that we think we’re going to get to in 2030, 2040, and 2050,” saidDeglau is referencing goals of limiting the global temperature increase to well below 2 degrees Celsius.
While he acknowledged that petroleum products will be used for many years to come, Deglau said it can no longer be the go-to. Pointing to the extreme weather events and resulting damage Canada has already seen due to the climate crisis — fires, heat waves and flooding in B.C., agricultural droughts and more — Dolter said those challenges will only worsen if more drastic action isn’t taken.
“In 2021, updated forecasting showed we are on pace to exceed that goal and emissions will be reduced by at least 50 per cent below 2005 levels by then,” the statement read. It went on to point to the Golden South and Blue Hill wind facilities and the Pesakastew and Awasis solar facilities coming online in the coming months and plans to make even deeper cuts to emissions.
The problem is daunting, says Yvette Crane of Regina Energy Transition, and the consequences dire even if we meet the current targets.
