Jackie Burns as Peggy Jo Tallas and Ashley Perez Flanagan as Rena in Alley Theatre's production of 'Cowboy Bob.'Peggy Jo Tallas became a minor Texas legend by dressing as a man and robbing banks without a weapon, doing most of her damage in the Dallas area. Now she rides again thanks to “Cowboy Bob,” a world premiere musical now running at Alley Theatre.
When we meet Peggy she’s tending to her ailing-but-fiery mother Jerry , who passes her time watching"Jeopardy!" and barking at the contestants who don’t know the questions. But Peggy is multi-tasking, as she’s also frantically getting dressed for her moonlighting gig. In her orange leather jacket, cowboy hat and fake mustache, she steps up to a bank window, passes a note and a bag and politely waits for the teller to fill it with bills.
From these early moments"Cowboy Bob" makes its mark as a production both soulful and resourceful. The main action takes place in a space that doubles as Peggy’s home and a chain restaurant called Pepper’s , where Rena , a waitress with dreams, toils through the drudgery of rude customers and a faux-cheerful manager . Up above the main stage is the bank .
Rena used to wait on Peggy, and she’s shocked to learn that her old customer, one of the nice ones, is in fact the infamous bank robber dubbed Cowboy Bob. She adopts Peggy’s story as a sort of avatar of liberation and possibility, a theme that runs through several of the show’s inspired songs . At its free-flowing best, “Cowboy Bob” merges the worlds of Peggy and Rena, creating a sense of poetic realism deftly navigated by director/choreographer Annie Tippe.
Meanwhile, Nathaniel Tenenbaum all but steals the show. He plays Stan, Peggy’s best bud who dreams of starting his own T-shirt line. Then he gets a job as a bank teller, which, as you might guess, puts him in Cowboy Bob’s path. Tanenbaum has two things going for him. He’s blessed with superb comic timing that can blur into moments of highly sensitive introspection.
