Rents are a factor as U.S. consumer prices climb in January
The numbers: The cost of staples such as rent, medical care and prepared food rose in January to push consumer prices higher, but inflation more broadly was still relatively tame.
Inflation is still quite low by historical standards, however, and there’s little likelihood that it will accelerate sharply anytime soon. Grocery prices are barely rising, however, and the cost of new cars and trucks were unchanged last month. Prices fell for prescription drugs and used vehicles.
