Robert Mugabe championed Zimbabwe's fight for independence—but his 37-year rule was marked by violence, economic chaos and corruption
Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe continued to attend international events despite his failing health before he was ousted from office by a coup.: Robert Mugabe who died on Friday led many lives in his 95 years: teacher, freedom fighter, president and despot. Mugabe was the hero of Zimbabwe’s fight for independence but became a villain with his 37-year rule marked with brutal repression of dissent, ballot rigging, economic ruin and corruption scandals.
World leaders reacting to his death include neighbouring South Africa’s Cyril Ramaphosa who praised his “valiant struggle against colonialism.” China’s foreign ministry called him an “outstanding” leader who “firmly defended the sovereignty of his country.”: Millions of Zimbabweans spilled out onto the streets in November 2017 to celebrate the dramatic end to Mugabe’s decades-long rule after the military forced him out.
The seizure of white-owned farms in the 1990s cratered food productions and exports from what was once southern Africa’s breadbasket. Soaring unemployment and hyperinflation led to Zimbabwe abandoning its own currency in 2009 amid power cuts and shortages of essential goods.
