Capt. Theodore E. Essenfeld created fake social media accounts posing as an ex-girlfriend and posted private sexually-explicit photos online, according to the indictment

The former commander of the Navy warship Pearl Harbor was arraigned in federal court in San Diego this week on an indictment charging him with cyberstalking an ex-girlfriend.

The indictment accuses Capt. Theodore E. Essenfeld of registering fake Facebook, LinkedIn, email and cell phone accounts under the woman’s name and using her personal information and photos without her knowledge or permission. “Essenfeld posted erotic and sexually-explicit content to the Facebook account, including photos and videos of the woman that she had previously privately shared with him, as well as graphic media files, or ‘memes,’” the U.S. Attorney’s Office said.

Gary Barthel, who is serving as Essenfeld’s attorney, said Thursday that his client “is cooperating with the government and is presumed innocent and we’re looking forward to learning more about the allegations.” Essenfeld, 51, who lives in Chula Vista, says on his LinkedIn page that he has served in the Navy for more than 32 years. He is currently assigned to the staff of Expeditionary Strike Group 3 in San Diego.
