Even as he attempts to learn the Spurs on the fly, veteran forward Stanley Johnson has set an example for younger teammates.
San Antonio Spurs forward Stanley Johnson goes up for a shot over Oklahoma City Thunder forward Darius Bazley in the first half of an NBA basketball game, Tuesday, Dec. 27, 2022, in Oklahoma City. As of Thursday, Stanley Johnson had been a member of the Spurs for all of 16 days.Even so, Johnson’s new Spurs teammates would have no trouble picking out his voice in a pitch black room.
“The thing that is consistent with good teams is that they are very vocal,” Johnson said. “That’s pretty much the only way I can navigate myself around the court is to ask my teammates questions. It is a lesson Johnson learned most directly during a two-season stint in Toronto from 2019 to 2021, where he matriculated at the feet of grizzled veteran point guard Kyle Lowry and the wiser-than-his-years Fred VanVleet.
Johnson has played 12.7 minutes per game since his arrival from the G League’s Sioux Falls Skyforce on Dec. 17. He is averaging 5.7 points and has shown an ability to be an effective glue guy-type on offense. Many younger Spurs are still adjusting to the type of physicality needed to thrive at the NBA level.“He uses his strength and his body to get on people,” Popovich said. “He’s tough. He’s physical. He sets a really good example in that regard for the rest of our guys.
