All those years ago: Pearland's 1980 girls state basketball team forged lasting memories
Sabrina Schield was a four-year starter at Pearland High School, leading the girls basketball team to the 1980 state tournament before having a standout career at Texas Tech.Sabrina Schield Marks, when pressed, can offer only two reasons she helped lead the Pearland High School girls basketball team to the Class 4A state tournament in 1980.
“She watched me as a seventh-grader and took an interest in me,” Marks said. “I talk to her several times a year and go visit her once or twice a year. “Sabrina went home that day and told her mother, and her mother got a yellow pad, a pencil and a chair and sat out by the goal. Sabrina then shot 300 shots every day for a year when she was in seventh grade.”Marks would go on to star at Texas Tech, where she was a three-year starter. Helping her earn that scholarship was a strong performance at the state tournament.The 5-9 senior did exactly that in the semifinal, a 78-55 loss to Dallas South Oak Cliff on Feb. 29.
Other members of the team included Mary Morris, Lynn Burgess, Leslie Hood, Theidus McClain, Barbara Petrash, Laura Hood, and Rhonda and Sondra Campbell, along with managers Linda May and Marilyn Austin. “She was my freshman English teacher, and I thought she hung the moon,” Marks said. “I begged and begged and begged for her to come to one of my games. She was newly married, and I wore them down to come see me play. After that first time, they were at every game.”“Pam was at my high school graduation, my college graduation, my marriage, and the birth of my kids,” she said. “She’s been at every one of my major life moments.
“Those girls were easy to love, easy to coach and fun to be around. They’re all grandmothers now, and it’s hard for me to imagine that, because I call them kids.
