The governor responded to an NJ Advance Media report on the teen mental health crisis.
A suicidal teenager’s harrowing experience, chronicled this week by NJ Advance Media, is troubling and “real,” and New Jersey is open to options to improve suicide prevention, Gov. Phil Murphy said Thursday.an in-depth special report published Sunday about a Central Jersey family struggling to find help for its son. The 16-year-old, who is diagnosed with major depressive disorder, has tried to kill himself at least seven times in the past two years amid a national mental health crisis.
Advocates say the mental health system must be reimagined to care for the evolving needs of patients who are increasingly younger and sicker. There is no quick fix to the problems, which extend far beyond New Jersey, Sefcik said. But there are immediate steps state leaders can take, she said. One immediate improvement would be to mandate suicide prevention training in the licensing requirements for therapists and other mental health practitioners, Sefcik said. A bipartisan bill to do so has already been proposed in the state Legislature.
