Full 'Pink Moon': What to Know
This Friday, April’s full “Pink Moon” will be on display — its name, however, is quite deceiving. Here is everything you need to know.
So, why is it called a full “Pink Moon?”According to The Old Farmer’s Almanac, in ancient times people used to track the seasons through a lunar calendar, so names were given to recurring full moons to mark the change in season.April’s full moon was named the full “Pink Moon,” because it coincided with the blooming of “moss pink” or wild ground phlox — a bright pink wildflower, one of the first flowers of spring.
But will the moon actually appear pink?Sadly, no. The moon will not take on a pink color, but will rather appear like any other full moon. It may be a yellowish color, or a brighter golden-orange once it nears the horizon.When can you see it?According to the Almanac, the moon will reach its peak at 7:12 a.m. EST on Friday. They also recommend taking a look the night before, Thursday, because the moon will be nearing its peak while illuminated against the dark sky.
And if you thought a “Pink Moon” was unique, get ready for another full moon on May 18, 2019 — this time a “Blue Moon,” according to Travel and Leisure.
