“Clothing is really powerful, and just trying to do what you can to use clothes as a tool to connect with other people and yourself; to see yourself more clearly.”
After wearing everything in their closet at least once, Carper was ready to give over control and let other people dress them. “By the time summer came around, I didn’t want to dress myself anymore. I wanted to try on other people's way of existing in the world,” Carper says. “This idea came out of boredom of myself,” they continue. From there, the On Loan project was born.
On Loan has established a space for Carper to examine their relationship with clothing and how it impacts their day-to-day interactions with others. “I wear [the outfit] for at least eight hours, but sometimes a little bit longer if I don't feel like I've fully worn the garment, which usually means if someone sees me in it,” Carper says.
