Like Becky Hammon, the transcendent and trailblazing San Antonio WNBA star and NBA assistant who accepted her overdue ticket to Springfield, Mass., on Saturday, Gregg Popovich and Tony Parker made it to the Hall on their on merits, taking their own paths.
Gregg Popovich worried he was about to blow it all.
Was the kid ready for this? How on earth could he have been? It wasn’t just that he was so much younger than the grown men Popovich was asking — no, demanding — the kid lead. It was that nobody with his background ever had done it at any age, let alone at 19. To claim that roll of the bones sent both Popovich and Parker to Saturday’s election into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame would be way too simple, and way too cute. No enshrinement ever boils down to one anecdote, or one season, or even one decade.
But there’s something fitting about this pair – born on different continents into different worlds, more than 34 years apart – being the two Spurs greats to enter the Hall together. Nobody ever doubted Duncan, the No. 1 pick in the 1997 NBA draft who went on to win two NBA MVPs and three Finals MVPs. Ginobili arrived in San Antonio as a proven winner, both in international play and in the EuroLeague.
