Mail-in ballot explosion puts the squeeze on county vote counters
Voters expecting to know quickly who had vanquished the competition to become their next mayor or member of the city council have had their hopes dashed this week.
On Thursday, the winner of high-profile contests such as the San Jose and Oakland mayoral races was still unknown — along with smaller but significant races such as the battle for Santa Clara County’s District 1 Supervisor seat. Hundreds of thousands of ballots still need to be counted, and many counties were taking off Veteran’s Day on Friday, elections officials said.
Mail-in ballots, which every registered voter in California receives thanks to legislation passed in 2021, take much longer to process than in-person voting, Gerston said. It requires ballot workers to verify signatures, sort envelopes and prepare them for voting machine processing.Just four years ago, about 78% of voters in Santa Clara County were mailing their ballots, already a high number. That number jumped to 95% this November election, according to estimates by the registrar of voters.
At the same time, high voter participation is creating a consistent stream of ballots. While the 2018 midterms saw record turnout, likely due to the Trump administration galvanizing Democratic voters, this year’s elections still saw a considerable number heading to the ballot box. Santa Clara County’s turnout this year is expected to be between 55% and 65% compared to 70.61% in 2018. Contra Costa County is reporting 55% turnout this year compared to 68% four years ago.
