Akron has never had a head football coach with the credentials of Joe Moorhead.

Akron Zips football coach Joe Moorhead enters his second season after a 2-10 record in 2022.AKRON, Ohio – Why would a soon to be 50-year old coach want the University Akron football job?Add in this fact: The coach could have taken million-dollar-a-year offensive coordinator jobs at Big 5 Conference schools in each of the last two seasons.

The Zips have never had a head coach with his varied experience at the highest levels of college football.“After last season, I got calls about Joe from major college programs and even the NFL wanting to talk to him,” said Akron Athletic Director Charles Guthrie. “Joe is committed to Akron. He was here when we won before. We know – and he knows – he can win here.”To Moorhead, Akron “feels like home.” He was raised in Penn Hills, near Pittsburgh. He and his wife still have family there.

One hot summer day when Moorhead was a young teenager, his father brought the son to the steel mill. He took him inside and had him look at the people sweating as they made steel.“I want you to see this,” said the father. “I do this so you don’t have to.”“That taught me so much,” said Moorhead. “The mill was not what he wanted to do with his life, but it was a sacrifice for us. My parents put our welfare above their own.”Sean Meagher/The OregonianMoorhead was a QB at Fordham.

It turned out the voice on the phone belonged to Curt Cignetti . In 1998, he was Pitt’s recruiting coordinator. They connected and Moorhead left sports writing behind. You get the idea.University of Akron President Gary L. Miller with new football coach Joe Moorhead and athletic director Charles Guthrie.Guthrie had heard Moorhead and his wife liked Akron when they were here from 2004-08. Akron had two winning seasons under head coach J.D. Brookhart, including an 11-5 record in the MAC.

“It’s worked out great,” he said. “We’ve been able to get back to Pittsburgh and family has been able to visit us more frequently. We’ve been able to attend both our sons football games. My daughter, fiancé and grandson also recently moved up here and will be married at St. Sebastian in Akron next July.”

“When Joe took over, we didn’t have the talent or depth to win,” said A.D. Guthrie. “Now, that’s changing. This is not a gold plate job, but Joe’s transforming the program, especially with the transfer portal and his recruiting connections.
