Young people are trying to engage with their parents, relatives, and community members in hopes of preventing Donald Trump from winning the 2020 election.
Growing up at the base of the Saginaw Bay, in the crook of Michigan’s oven mitt, Aubree Jean never identified as a Republican or a Democrat. “I always saw myself in the middle, even as a kid,” Aubree, now 19, and a freshman at Southern Illinois University in Carbondale, toldShe was happy to play mediator when conversations between her Democratic and Republican friends got heated, and mainly avoided talking about politics at home with her Republican parents.
One conversation, about Trump’s proposed wall along the Mexican border, sticks out in Aubree’s mind. “She thought it was a good idea. I was hesitant to tell her my opinion because I respect her and she’s sacrificed a lot for me to have the best life. I told her in a polite way that I didn’t agree with the policy and thought itin the first place, so why would we spend money on that? At the end of the conversation, she was coming around to my side,” Aubree said.
