A broken 42-inch pipe had forced the city to cut off access to running water.

Water was knocked out to tens of thousands of residents in Fort Lauderdale and surrounding cities after a private contractor hit a water main during construction.
Mayor Dean Trantalis said the temporary fix involved building a concrete bunker around the broken part of the damaged pipe. The city, which estimated 220,000 customers were affected, began shutting down service to the Fort Lauderdale and surrounding towns Thursday at around 7 a.m.
